Save The Wilmont

For those who haven't heard, the City of Raleigh has recently deemed the Wilmont uninhabitable. Yes, the famous Wilmont Apartments has been condemned. This building, a staple in any N.C. State student's walk down memory lane, will be evacuated by the end of May as mandated by the city. There is even the possibility of demolition, which is sure to make anyone who has ever ridden down Hillsborough Street shudder.

There is no denying the fact that the building was in need of extensive repairs. However, a vast majority of the residents don't want to leave, many of them having lived there for several years. The problems began when one tenant missed rent month after month until he was evicted. Faced with the option of paying the backed rent or having it show up on his already abysmal credit score, he decided to complain enough to get the building condemned. I'm aware that the owners/managers of the building are at fault for not keeping it up to code and making necessary repairs in time, but it simply makes me feel better to think that this person can add every resident of the Wilmont (and Raleigh) to the long list of people he's screwed over. Yes, it's personal.

Now an entire building of people who are passionate about the place they live are being forced to leave.

Anyone who cares enough about this staple of N.C. State life can at least show support by signing the petition. More up-to-date details are posted daily.
