Today I had to cover the world premier of an HBO Sports documentary about the rivalry between UNC and Duke. The 60 minute film, directed by George Roy and called "The Battle for Tobacco Road," made its debut at the Carolina Theater in Durham this afternoon. The VIP event before the screening was invite-only, and I was able to talk to the director and former UNC player Eric Montross.
The theater was full of people clad in their favorite shade of blue. While it would be easy for me to dismiss the film due to my allegiance to NCSU, the film was actually really good. I learned a lot, and while it didn't make me like either team more (or hate either team less), it certainly put the rivalry into a new perspective. The fact that I was watching it with hundreds of fans from either side of the road made it more enjoyable. They would laugh, cheer, and boo as certain historical moments and players appeared on the screen. I'm glad I got to be there to see it. It is certainly worth checking out. It premiers on HBO on Monday, Feb. 23rd, at 9:00 pm.
