Pedestrian X-ing

I was sent to Durham to check out a pedestrian death in Durham tonight. The victim was hit in the parking lot of a Buy Quick Food Mart. The driver fled the scene, and there is no description of the car or the driver. I arrived at the scene just in time to see the body-bag being zipped up as police nonchalantly took down the tape and cleaned up. There was a smell of sulfur and bleach. The corpse was loaded into a van and the scene was cleared as fast as it was caused. I waited around in the cold for a moment, grabbing a last bit of b-roll before I headed back to the station. A car pulled up and after the quick errand in the store, the driver and passenger took a moment to discuss what happened. I was able to hear some "a man just died there" and some laughter as they waved goodbye at the bleached and shiny wet portion of the parking lot that minutes earlier was occupied by the body of an innocent person.

Most people wouldn't argue that I am a terribly sensitive person. I am usually the first to make a joke out of an otherwise serious situation. However, this bothered me. No one deserves to die in the parking lot of a Buy Quick Food Mart (complete with barred windows) in the outskirts of downtown Durham.

In other news, I just finished packing and leave tomorrow morning around 9 or 10 am for D.C. It should be absolutely insane, but I am looking forward to it. I'm not paying for a ride up there or the hotel room, but I am going to be working hard the entire time. I found out I've got the evening shifts up there, so in my down time I plan on shooting as much as possible. Hopefully my media credential will make it a bit easier for me to get around, but I highly doubt it. Expect a rather lengthy update when I get back on Wednesday, assuming my patience sustains itself long enough to allow me to survive the traffic.
